Creating a management group

In the following example, we will create a management group named IT and associate our subscription with this group. Here’s what we’ll do:

  1. We will search for management groups in the search bar at the top of the Azure portal and click Management groups when the service is identified, as illustrated in the following screenshot:

  1. Since we do not have any management groups yet, we will need to enable the feature. Click Start using management groups, as illustrated in the following screenshot:

  1. Enter a Management group ID and Management group display name value and click Submit, as illustrated in the following screenshot:

  1. A notification will indicate the successful creation of a management group, and we will be presented with the management group overview. Note the Tenant Root Group entity in the following screenshot—this is enabled by default on all environments and sits above all management groups and subscriptions:

Top Tip

The first management group in Azure is the tenant root group—this is created by default and is the top parent group; all subsequent management groups will fall as child management groups under the root group. Also, the root group cannot be deleted.

You have now created your first management group, and this can be used for better governance and management of Azure.

You have acquired several skills to assist you in driving governance within the organization for Azure resources, as well as understanding costs for effective management of the platform. Resource locks, tagging in Azure, resource groups, subscriptions, Cost Management + Billing, and management groups were all covered.

In the next chapter, we will go through some labs relating to this entire first section on managing Azure identities and governance.
